The Mozambican police on Wednesday arrested three people in the Tete city for the illegal possession of two rhinoceros horns.
According to police spokesperson Lurdes Ferreira, the suspects have been detained whilst investigations are undertaken to determine the origins of the horns.
Police are making some progress in tackling poaching. Earlier in the week it was revealed that a total of 208 poachers were arrested in conservation areas in Tete province between 2014 and the first quarter of this year. In addition, a hundred homemade weapons, ammunition, and poison used to kill animals were seized. These poachers are mainly targeting elephants due to the high value of their ivory tusks.
However, it is generally thought that rhinoceroses are extinct in Mozambique. Thus, it is more than likely that the horns were hewn from the bodies of rhinoceroses in a neighbouring country.
