Inhambane province’s Vilankulo authorities yesterday decreed three days of mourning for the victims of Monday’s tragic road accident in Mavanza, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people, with nine others injured.
A Mazenga company bus crashed at high speed into a stationary timber truck on the N1 on Monday.
The city council met in extraordinary session and, in coordination with the government of Vilankulo district, decided to declare a three-day mourning period during which the city will fly the flag at half-mast, while the government studies how to support the families of victims of the tragedy.
Most of the deceased were residents of Vilankulo, and were speedily buried following the accident. More funerals still took place yesterday afternoon. Julia Magaia, clinical director of Vilankulo Rural Hospital, told Notícias that most of the bodies received at the morgue were claimed by relatives.
