Three individuals suspected of boarding the Pescamar ship a mile off the Port of Beira last Wednesday are being held by the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM).
The ‘Diário de Moçambique’ has learned that the individuals were detained in the Munhava neighbourhood in possession of a car containing the shrimp stolen in the assault, allegedly ready to be transported to Chimoio.
The police first detained the owner of another vessel who, in turn, indicated the assailants. In the ensuing operation, the owner of the car fled as soon as he detected the police presence, leaving the vehicle behind.
The ‘Diário de Moçambique’ has learned that the boat owner admitted his part in the crime, saying that he was asked in Praia-Nova by one of the gang members to make a day-time transport run to a vessel that supposedly broken down offshore for an undisclosed sum.
But the man who allegedly hired him only arrived at the agreed launching spot that night, accompanied by others.
The boat owner at first refused to do the job because it was night-time, but the gang, by that time swollen to seven individuals armed with two pistols and machetes, threatened him, and he agreed to participate in the robbery.
The three men detained have confessed, while another five remain at large. Contacted by our reporter, police spokesman in Sofala, Daniel Macuácua, would neither confirm nor deny the arrest of the alleged assailants.
