Thousands march in Mozambique on International Labour Day

Thousands of people marched peacefully on Tuesday in Mozambique’s capital city Maputo as part of the celebration for the International Labour Day.
With songs and dances, some marchers took advantage of the day to express their dissatisfaction with the unbearable cost of living and the slight increase on minimum wage approved by the government days ago.
The president of the National Social Security Institute (INSS) of Mozambique, Francisco Mazoio, as the organiser of the march, told Xinhua that it was “a normal and respectful celebration,” despite people’s demand for better working conditions and salaries.
“There is still a long way to go and a lot to do with regards to the labor area. Problems such as dismissals without just cause still persist, “he said.
The general secretary of the Mozambican Workers’ Organisation (OTM-Central Sindical), Alexandre Munguambe, said in a speech that negotiating the minimum wage adjustment under the country’s current financial crisis has been was a major challenge for the association.
“We are aware that the results we have achieved are the possible ones and they still do not meet the workers’ basic needs,” said the general secretary.
He also reiterated the need to maintain active dialogue on wage bargaining and improvement of working conditions at the enterprise level.
