More than 15,000 Catholics from all 46 parishes of the Archdiocese of Maputo are expected the make the journey to Namaacha district this Saturday to mark the 75th anniversary of the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima.
The pilgrimage is a gesture of faith in apparitions of Mary, Mother of Jesus to three shepherds in Portugal in 1917, and the shrine’s 75th anniversary coincides with the centenary of the apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherds in Portugal.
The director of pastoral coordination in the Archdiocese of Maputo, Father José Pinto, said that everything was prepared to the smallest detail, so that believers could find their spirituality renewed in the act of pilgrimage.
“We hope that everything goes well, because, when things go well, it is a joy both for those who organise things and those who benefit from the service made available to the community and the Archdiocese itself. The teams of volunteers led by Father Marcelo are already on the ground together with people of goodwill, who are putting at the disposal of pilgrims who go by foot all means and supplies necessary for them to remain steadfast and continue their journey,” he said.
Foot pilgrims could rest assured that safety measures were in place along National Road Number 2 (EN2), he said, adding that believers from neighbouring southern Africa and the kingdom of eSwatini might also be expected this year.
