Thirteen young gold miners drowned on Monday, in Rapale district, Nampula province.
They had been panning for gold along the Melule river.
The deaths occurred during the night, when the dry river bed flooded with rain that fell that day, head of Namaita administrative post Faruk Satar explained.
Rescue operations are still ongoing, he added.
