Presidency (File) Afonso Dhalakama and Filipe Nyusi met for the first time one year ago.
After having met President Nyusi earlier in the week, UK Minister for International Development Nicholas Hurd spoke by telephone with Afonso Dhlakama on Tuesday, and came away saying that there is no trust between the government and Renamo, making an agreement between the parties difficult.
Hurd made his remarks on Tuesday in Maputo International Airport.
“There is a lack of trust between the parties,” said Hurd, urging the parties to seek reconciliation instead of “returning to violence and war”.
“The solution is now in the hands of civil society and community leaders,” the Briton said, without giving further details.
Hurd had informed the president of his intention to speak to Dhlakama in advance, with President Nyusi saying he hoped that the two would be able to talk.
President Nyusi reiterated his willingness to talk with the Renamo leader, and, discussing the matter with members of his cabinet yesterday, stressed that any dialogue with Renamo would have to observe all legal requirements, so as to make any decisions enforceable.
