Mozambique: Mine halts activities following terrorist raid
The revelation comes from the Commander-General of the Police of Mozambique
Mozambican Police Commander General Bernardino Rafael says there are Mozambicans involved in the destabilisation of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania, recruited in the same way as those terrorising parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique.
Rafael made the announcement on Sunday, 3, in Maputo, on his return from Luanda, where he attended an annual meeting of Southern African police forces.
“These citizens (who are in the DRC) are our children who left here, allegedly to learn the Koran, and those in Tanzania went there looking for work and ended up joining groups of evildoers,” Rafael said.
In relation to the group operating in northern Mozambique, Rafael said it was “being disrupted with the cooperation of other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries”.
However, analysts say that, in addition to the military response, fighting this group will require other actions of a social nature.
In academia, it is being said that the emergence of groups of attackers in the north of the country is partly due to the fact that the Mozambican authorities have raised expectations surrounding the natural resources in the region, whereas exploitation is in fact taking some time to get under way.
About a week ago, armed groups murdered 10 people in the district of Palma, and images of alleged gunmen taken somewhere in northern Cabo Delgado circulated on social networks last weekend.
