President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi said on Sunday that the images of armed violence in Cabo Delgado circulating on social networks are part of a terrorist strategy to provoke fear in the population, Sala da Paz reports.
Speaking on Sunday at ceremonies celebrating the 28th anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Agreement on 4 October, 1992, in Rome, Nyusi said that “it is an accepted fact that terrorism, in all its variants, is a test of leadership all over the world. Experience shows that this evil is global, with motivations that vary from nation to nation. In its strategy, it is based on the fear it creates in its victims. This fear it seeks to publicise as a way of expanding, and to create the idea of a void of authority,” the president said in explanation of events in the northern operational theatre.
“When we look at what has been happening in Cabo Delgado, we realise that this strategy of spreading fear, trivialising life and violating human rights by terrorists is underway. Unfortunately, this has been echoed by the sometimes conscious and at other times unconscious actions of some people who have dedicated themselves to passing on images of terror experienced in Cabo Delgado without the filter of criticism regarding sources or the doctoring of images,” the Commander in Chief of the Defence and Security Forces explained.
“This has created the space for abusive acts to be attributed to our Defence and Security Forces, while they are [in fact] the guarantors of respect for the physical and psychological integrity of Mozambicans in conflict zones,” President Nyusi warned.
