A truck carrying 600 bags of cement crashed head on into a lagoon on National Road Number 1, somewhere between 3 de Fevereiro and the Xinavane intersection, in Manhiça district, Maputo province, ‘Domingo’ reported on Wednesday.
The accident happened when the driver of the truck tried to avoid a collision with a van that was also heading towards Manhiça – Xai-Xai.
Driver Daniel Ismael claims that the driver of the other truck braked suddenly to avoid a pothole, and it was in an attempt to avoid a collision that his vehicle left the roadway and plunged into the lagoon. No-one was hurt in the incident.
The cargo was intended for construction work at [the future] Xai-Xai International Airport.
A traffic policeman assigned to Manhiça district and contacted by ‘Domingo’ cited the drivers’ irresponsibility as the main cause of the accident.
