“Near-death experience”: Armed robbers attack Catholic sisters’ home for girls in Mozambique
The trial of the son-in-law of former Mozambican president Armando Guebuza began today in the Judicial Court of Maputo City.
Zófimo Muiuane arrived at the Judicial Court in Maputo for the first day of trial dressed in prison uniform, his face hidden and under Rapid Intervention Force protection.
Zófimo, as he is simply known, is accused of having murdered his wife, Valentina Guebuza, who was shot four times at her home on 14 December 2016. Her husband is the only suspect.
The December 2016 incident at the couple’s residence in one of Maputo’s best residential neighbourhoods is seen as a typical case of domestic violence that ended in tragedy.
Sitting in one of the seats reserved for the audience, former Mozambican head of state and the victim’s father, Armando Guebuza, spent a few hours at the trial before hearing his son-in-law deny the charges, and then left the building.
Zófimo Muiuane told the court that the couple had had an argument on the fateful night. The defendant said that Valentina Guebuza drew a firearm in the middle of the argument and, in the fight to take possession of it, the revolver ended up firing, hitting the daughter of the former statesman. He in effect claimed that the fatal shot was fired by the victim herself .
The prosecution expects the trial to be swift, thinking that there is little doubt that Zófimo Muiuane was the murderer and that he purposely acted to kill his wife.
