The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, yesterday met representatives of the Order of Nurses of Mozambique (OEMo) to discuss the challenges faced by the profession and seek solutions to strengthen it.
During the meeting, OEMo president Maria Acácia Ernesto Lourenço presented a set of requests, including support in the processing of essential documents for the practice of nursing in the country.
Created in 2017, OEMo is currently in the second term of its existence and is responsible for regulating the nursing profession and teaching in the subject.
According to Maria Lourenço, one of the main obstacles faced by the institution is the delay in approving the reformulated statutes, which aim to adapt the entity’s competencies to the reality of professional practice. The process depends on approval by the Ministry of Health, the Council of Ministers and, finally, the Assembly of the Republic.
Another key point addressed was the need to speed up the processing of the Nursing Professional Statute, a document that seeks to ensure greater dignity and appreciation for the profession. Lourenço requested the head of state’s help in moving this process forward more quickly. In addition, OEMo reinforced the importance of creating the first Higher School of Nursing Sciences, a project that began in 2022. According to Maria Lourenço, nursing must be recognized as an autonomous science, distinct from medicine, and says the existence of a
specific higher education institution will contribute to the advancement of research and innovation in the area.
“We believe that having our own school will allow for the development of research that can result in improvements in the quality of care provided to the Mozambican population,” she said.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of dialogue between the government and OEMo to strengthen nursing in the country, ensuring better working conditions for professionals and improving health services for the population.
