Land clearing at the site of the new landfill which will replace Hulene is about to start. The site is in the Matlemele neighbourhood in Matola municipality.
Twenty-one families will be relocated with compensation in the process. They will initially stay in rented houses for 6 months. The remaining families in the area will relocate to the remaining unoccupied space.
Matola mayor Calisto Cossa said on Wednesday that clearing the new landfill site will start this week, as will cleaning the site the families are to be removed to.
Maputo and Matola’s garbage dumps are now full, and have been operating in the open air, at some risk to public health.
The idea of building the landfill is not popular with Matlemele residents, even though 1.7 million meticais will be disbursed to compensate for the 86 farming plots belonging to the residents.
Golhosa in Matola municipality is one of the places the families might be resettled.
