Superstition is said to be keeping Maxixe’s mayor from living in his official residence, Miaramar reports. But the council poo-poos the notion, and says that the councillor can move in as soon as a US$76,600 “rehabilitation” is completed.
A year has passed since Fernando Bambo was sworn into office as Maxixe’s mayor. The rules say it is now time for him to move into his official residence, where former mayors Narciso Pedro and Simão Rafael spent 15 and five years respectively.
But rumour has it that either superstition is keeping Mayor Bambo from actually moving in or public funds are being injected into his private residence.
Our reporting team sought to find out from Maxixe City Council, in Inhambane province, why Fernando Bambo continued to live in his own house, given that an official residence was available.
Regarding the supposed public funds being used to maintain Bambo’s own house, our interlocutor flatly denied any amount coming from the municipality, challenging our reporting team to participate in one of the City Council’s regular audit sessions in order to learn more about the subject.
According to the Council, the cost of rehabilitating the official residence is estimated at around 5 million meticais [around US$76,600 at current exchange rates]. This “rehabilitation” reportedly includes the construction of the suite of outbuildings seen in the video below, the house’s water supply “system, plus buying furniture and paying for the landscaping.
