The London Book Fair Literary Translation Initiative Award goes to… Trinta Zero Nove, Mozambique

Editora Trinta Zero Nove was awarded the Literary Translation Initiative Award at the London Book Fair (LBF) International Excellence Awards this Tuesday. The Mozambican publisher had been shortlisted with three other projects from Bulgaria, Germany and Singapore.

One year after receiving a special mention at the London Book Fair in the same category, Editora Trinta Zero Nove was distinguished with the Literary Translation Initiative Award.

The announcement was made this Tuesday morning, but publisher Sandra Tamele still lacked words in the afternoon. After all, her micro-publisher is so new and, in two years, it has already reached great heights. “Honestly, I am overjoyed. I’m so happy. This is not just my prize. There are a number of people who have contributed. It’s a very big achievement,” she enthused.

In this year’s edition, Trinta Zero Nove was competing with initiatives from three countries, namely Elizabeth Kostova Foundation (Bulgaria), Tender Leaves Translation (Singapore), Uebersetzen (Germany).

“We found the ground-breaking Editora Trinta Zero Nove (which made last year’s shortlist) especially inspiring – it’s an imaginative, dynamic and visionary programme of activity. We couldn’t be more excited to have it as our 2021 winner,” the prize literature reads

Henceforth, for Trinta Zero Nove, the sky is the limit.

“If in a short time we have achieved so much, we feel motivated to take the next step,” Tamele said. This might be a space where the reader can go to buy books from the publisher, or even just to read them.

In addition, Trinta Zero Nove intends to edit and translate more works for younger readers.

“We are now betting on the children’s audience. We are having difficulty attracting the audience between teenagers and adults, and are thinking about creating and translating content for 13-year-old girls and boys. We are even going to launch a collection of books for this audience, which will be available in Portuguese, Makhuwa, Cena and Changana,” Sandra Tamele declares.

One of the immediate benefits of winning the Literary Translation Initiative Award is that Trinta Zero Nine will gain access to the translation rights of writers who it would not otherwise be able to translate into Mozambican languages.

In addition to literary translation, the winning initiatives of this edition of the Excellence Awards will be celebrated at the London Book Fair in an online version, on the 29th of this month. At the event, publishers, translators and authors will discuss pressing issues pertaining to their area of expertise, accompanied by author lectures, editorial panels and seminars.

Regarding the initiatives distinguished at this edition of the London Book Fair, Director Andy Ventris said: “All the winners at this year’s International Excellence Awards demonstrate the ingenuity and talent to be found in the industry today, and we are delighted to recognise their work bringing books and learning to readers around the globe.”
