In the last five days, nearly 3,400 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have arrived by boat in the city of Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado. ‘Carta de Moçambique’ has learned that some of them arrived via Matemo Island, having left their homes in the Administrative Post of Mucojo, Macomia district.
After 25 boats moored on Sunday at Paquitequete beach, another 15 boats arrived there on Monday (19). Enquiries established that the boat owners were charging 600 meticais for each passenger, against the previous 500.
The situation is described as worrying, with people continuing to be transported in deplorable conditions. Some people arriving at Paquitequete have health problems and need medical assistance.
Volunteers from the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation, Mozambique Red Cross (CVM), Kuendeleya, Kupendana, the Emergency Operative Committee (COE) and even Pemba residents are on hand at the landing points to offer water, bread and tea to the newly arrived.
Childbirths during the trip
Despite the hardship and risk associated with traveling by sea, one woman, named Muaziza Nfalume, gave birth during the trip from Matemo to Pemba. The mother and her newborn baby girl were assisted on the beach by the relief teams and then transferred to hospital.
