Mozambique is often thought of as a tropical travel destination with warm beaches and sunshine, and generally not to be compared with the Louvre Museum in France or the Uffizi Gallery in Italy. The vision for Mozambique, however, is for the local art scene, which is vibrant, profoundly emotive and representative, to be a showcase of Africa!
Hollard Mozambique has a deep appreciation for the arts in all their forms. It is a passion, rooted in contemporary African art, which has been part of the Hollard group’s DNA since it was founded in 1980 and has grown, with the business.
Last week, to contribute to the promotion of artistic and cultural exchange between Mozambique and its neighbours, Henri Mittermayer, Hollard Mozambique CEO and his team hosted a Collectors & Appreciators Art Exchange at the Eduardo Mondlane University on Tuesday evening, 20 Nov.
Art appreciators included the likes of Suzie Goodman, Executive Director of Strauss & Co. (Fine Art Auctioneers), as well as one of their Senior Art Specialists, Dr Alistair Meredith. Dana Macfarlane the Director of White River Gallery, Gail Bosch from ITOO Artinsure and Daniel Hewson a Fine Art Researcher completed the contingent.
The programme featured a tour of the National Art Museum (Maputo) led by notable local art historian Dra Alda Costa with visits to some of Maputo’s most exciting art spaces, notably, Kulungwana Associaçao para o Desenvolvimento Cultural, Nucleo de Arte, Deal Espaço Creativo, Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, Arte d`Gema and culminating in a keynote talk on “African Art Now: Collecting On The Continent” by Dr Alistair Meredith at the University of Eduardo Mondlane, Directors Residence.
Mittermayer commented; “It was the first in what we hope will become a series of interactions aimed at raising the profile of Mozambican art and artists on the sub-continent,”
“It was an exciting opportunity for members of the local and South African art communities to interact,” says Mittermayer, “and it was as stimulating as it was educational. We look forward to hosting future events that can help us to open the way for more meaningful dialogue to benefit artists, collectors and everyone involved in the industry.”
Hollard is a committed supporter of many artistic endeavours – ranging from music, dance, to the creative arts – and is also the custodian of one of the largest contemporary art collections in Africa, so undertakings like this will bring much wanted attention to local Mozambican art and artists
