Mozambican boxers Alcinda Panguane and Rady Gramane have made history by becoming the first Mozambicans to make it to the semi-finals – and also the first to guarantee bronze medals – at the Women’s World Boxing Championships.
Panguana guaranteed her presence in the semi-finals of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 by beating Cameroonian Cindy Djankeu Ngamba in the quarter-finals on Monday.
Panguana benefits from the fact that losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals, while the winner advances to the gold-medal match.
However, she is motivated to go as far as possible, and is going through to fight for the gold medal in the wake of her brilliant performance in Istanbul, Turkey.
The highlight is that the Mozambican boxer beat Ngamba, the Cameroonian refugee living in Great Britain, who had been the tournament sensation up until this stage, having knocked Olympic Games bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain out of the quarter-finals on Friday.
Panguana will compete in the 60-70 kg category semi-finals this Wednesday afternoon, with her fists turned towards the final and the gold medal. The Mozambican boxer will fight Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khazova for a place in the final.
Rady Gramane also moves on to the semi-finals
Just as Panguana did in the Women’s Light Middle (66-70kg) category, boxer Rady Gramane also defeated her opponent in the quarter-finals, qualifying for the semis by defeating Ukrainian Karolina Makhno this Monday.
She competes in the Women’s Middle (70-75kg) category and, in Wednesday evening’s semi-final, will be facing Canadian Tammara Thibeault, the American middleweight (75kg) champion, and one of the favourites in Istanbul.
Both Mozambican boxers have made history by reaching this far in a world championship, and, in addition to the bronze medals, are both guaranteed prize money of US$25,000 for their semi-final appearances.
