Residents of the CMC neighbourhood blocked the Maputo Ring road today with uncollected trash, in protest against the failure to remove garbage for more than two weeks. The City Council was forced to mobilise trucks and a workforce of 50 people for urgent intervention.
Residents took rubbish from containers to block the ring road early in the morning. Traffic was stopped temporarily and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) was called to intervene.
Normality only resumed after the arrival of a truck and a team of more than 50 people to remove the waste.
At issue were containers overflowing with garbage and causing bad odours for local residents, who say the containers are poorly located and pose a danger to public health.
The Magoanine CMC neighbourhood is not the only one with problems due to the lack of garbage collection. The Zimpeto neighbourhood also has containers full of rubbish, uncollected for a similar length of time.
