The curious case of Inhambane woman they almost lynched “suspected of becoming a hyena”

Residents of the city of Inhambane are in a panic at the supposed prowling about of a hyena woman in the dead of night. The woman, in her late forties, is accused of transforming into a hyena and prowling about the neighbourhood, to the distress of residents.

The hyena woman enters homes and scavenges for pots of food in the fireplace and other possessions, as well as springing upon fishermen to seize their catch, Radio Mozambique reports.

Acting on their suspicions, the neighbourhood began to pay attention to the movements of the hyena woman, who started her incursions last Saturday. Residents set up two patrol teams, who followed the footsteps of the imagined animal, ending up in the woman’s home.

Their incursion roused the lady of the house, who set about vociferously questioning the invasion of her abode.

Enraged, the villagers resorted to violence, but the intervention of the neighbourhood authorities averted the worst, with head of D block Simone Rafael saying later that only local structures intervention had prevented the mob taking justice into its own hands.
