Mozambican student Canira Juma has won second place at the international computer project competition, (INFOMATRIX) held recently in Bucharest, Romania.
In addition to promoting professional excellence, the competition fosters dialogue and cooperation between students and teachers from around the world. More than 1,000 students from 46 countries presented 595 projects at the event, which brings together the world’s best IT students.
Juma, from Birlik International School, Matolla, used Blender 3, an open-source computer programme for creating and editing 3D interactive applications, to create a short film called ‘The Angry Boy’, which won the Digital Art category prize.
The animated film tells the story of a boy who, to control his anger, was forced by his father to nail himself to a wooden frame until he learned to master his feelings. Juma now hopes to have his film shown in cinemas, to show people how art works can be produced using technology.
His project, he said, had relied on the support of his parents, who backed him and bought to the tickets Olympiad in Romania. “I thank everyone who believed in me and made the film possible,” Juma said, adding that the medal was motivation for everyone to continue working to achieve their dreams and the possibility of a scholarship at a foreign university.
INFOMATRIX is organised by the Lumina Educational Institutions Foundation, established in 2001, an organisation that supports above-average students through its scholarship programmes for the winners of the International Computation Projects Olympiad.
