Tete province will, as of Monday, have an integrated radio spectrum management and monitoring system comprising a fixed antenna and a mobile station. with Tete governor Paulo Auade getting acquainted with the operation of the system in person.
The handover of the ‘SIGMER’ system, at the fixed station’s location in Chingodzi ward, will be attended by representatives of public and private communications sector, defence and security forces and other entities.
The system is intended to manage the radio spectrum, combat its misuse, and locate equipment being used for illegal communications. The radio frequency spectrum is a scarce natural resource and a state domain. Unlicensed radio communications is expressly prohibited.
SIGMER was inaugurated in August 2016 in the capital of the country by the minister of transport and communications, and aims to cover the main national population and business centers across the country.
The Communications Regulatory Authority defines its main challenges in Tete province as the expansion of mobile cellular telephone coverage to the administrative posts and localities, the expansion of digital terrestrial broadcasting services, the development of broadband infrastructures, the fight against crime, the promotion, expansion and diversification of innovative services and the improvement of service quality.
Tete province has eight postal service operators, one landline operator, three mobile operators, 10 data transmission and Internet operators, 15 value-added service operators and a cable television service provider.
In terms of mobile coverage, all 15 districts are covered, including 44 administrative posts. Only 87 of the 139 localities are covered. There are more than five million mobile subscribers in the province. Landline covers 13 districts and 17 administrative posts.
Radio communications are used in all sectors of activity, including electronic communications networks and services such as broadcasting, national defence, public safety, business and industry, aeronautical and maritime communications, navigation aids, personal communications, scientific research and so on. All these applications are crucial to the growth of the economy and the well-being of citizens.
The growing use of the radio spectrum is due in particular to the progressive need for mobility, as well as the opportunities that it can create. All this adds to the importance of an effective spectrum management system.
