A multi-sectoral team tasked with the prevention and combat of drug use and trafficking in Tete province has incinerated about half a ton of narcotics and various smuggled pharmaceuticals.
According to National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) spokesperson for Tete, Célia Roque, the narcotics were Cannabis sativa, also known as ‘suruma’, and ‘Swazi’, a hard drug consumed by young people in parts of the capital city. The pharmaceuticals were from the Kingdom of Eswatini.
Roque said that the products incinerated had been seized in Moatize, Angónia, Tsangano, Chifunde and Changara districts over the last three years.
Two passenger transporters prosecuted over alleged drug trafficking
Meanwhile, two semi-public passenger transport companies based in the city of Tete are being prosecuted for alleged involvement in drug trafficking schemes.
The companies operate between the city of Tete and various parts of the country, and were stopped by the authorities who found luggage containing Cannabis sativa and hard drugs.
A criminal case is being processed by the justice administration bodies to hold the transport companies accountable.
Roque also noted that, in connection with the cases, two individuals of Mozambican nationality were being held for involvement in the transportation of drugs, which is prohibited by law.
According to Roque, over the last three years, ten criminal cases were opened against the same number of people for trafficking, consumption and illegal sale of drugs.
