The provincial governor of the central Mozambican province of Tete, Paulo Auade, on Friday, reaffirmed that health will continue to be the priority in the allocation of financial, material and human resources.
The governor made this pledge during the coordinating council of the provincial health directorate, which was held under the theme “strengthening primary health care”.
He stated that to live up to the theme, large investments are needed in the health network at both primary level and the higher referral levels. He added, ‘continued improvements in the delivery and performance of health care should be a daily and constant concern for all health professionals”.
The governor recommended that the sector should, in a serious and regular manner, assess the level of satisfaction of the users of health centres, to determine the causes of problems and to adopt appropriate measures to combat them.
However, Auade warned that the sector has to adopt austerity measures due to the country’s economic situation. He recommended that steps be taken to strengthen financial capacity by raising revenue and reinforcing partnerships with international development agencies.
According to Auade, one of the key developments recently in the health sector is the adoption of measures to improve planning, implementation and accountability, and the correction of inequalities in the distribution of funds.
In particular, the governor pointed to the introduction of the electronic state financial management system (e-SISTAFE) as a tool for the decentralisation of management to the district level.
Governor Auade added, “the strengthening of technical capacity and accountability should be the focus, in order to promote a decentralised, efficient and reliable health system for our people”.
