Approximately 600,000 tons of tomato have so far been produced in the district of Chiúta in Tete province, a 10% increase over last year’s campaign.
Despite the increase in production, Chiúta continues to register large losses, for lack of a processing factory.
Chiúta district administrator Gonçalves Jemusse says that a project to build a tomato processing plant in the area, which would significantly reduce crop wastage, has been on hold for more than five years.
Within Chiúta district, the village of Caúnda and the administrative post of Cazula have this season posted the highest tomato production figures.
