Terrorists killed three people on Saturday, New Year’s Day, in an attack against the village of Nova Zambezia, in Macomia district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.
One of the victims was shot and died of his injuries, while the other two, who had tried to escape from the raiders, were beheaded. The terrorists also stole foodstuffs from the villagers, mostly rice and vegetable oil.
The previous day terrorists attacked Darumba village, also in Macomia, where they murdered a fisherman. He was part of a group who had set off from Matemo island to the coastal region of Macomia. The colleagues of the murdered man were able to escape.
The paper’s sources also reported that last Tuesday several jihadists surrendered to the authorities in the district of Ibo, apparently because of the offensive by the Mozambican defence and security forces, and their allies from the SADC Military Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
In Chitoto village, a clash between terrorists and the local militia led to the deaths of five terrorists and a sixth was captured. They were part of a group of 19 terrorists who intended to attack the village but were ambushed by the militia. The other 13 escaped.
“Carta de Mocambique” also claims that some Mozambicans are escaping from the war by fleeing into Malawi. However, Cabo Delgado does not border on Malawi, and people displaced by the fighting in Cabo Delgado would have to cross all of Niassa, the largest province in the country, to reach Malawi.
The source for the story is a Malawian radio station, Zodiak Broadcasting, which claimed that some Mozambicans had reached the Malawian district of Mangochi, and that the Malawian Interior Minister, Richard Banda, was looking into the matter.
