A terrorist group launched a pre-dawn raid on Saturday against village of Nacate, on the outskirts of Macomia town, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to a report in the online edition of the independent daily “O Pais”, the group was attempting to steal food aid intended for victims of cyclone Kenneth, which struck Macomia on 25 April. From the initial reports, it was not clear how much, if any, food they had managed to take.
This is the first reported attack by the insurgents, believed to be inspired by Islamic fundamentalism, since the cyclone.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs guaranteed that, despite the raid, the UN will continue to channel aid to the cyclone victims.
Cited by “O Pais”, Deputy Defence Minister Jose Patricio declared that the armed forces are on the round, in readiness to defend the population.
@news_pinnacle says Nicáte/Nacate is a village which @FNyusi visited last Wednesday. If true, this is at least the third time the insurgents “respond” to a visit of the President in the province…
