Mozambique: Six people die in Nicoadala crash
For the second time in a week, islamist terrorists on Friday night attacked the village of Litandacua, in Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
There are no reports of any fatalities, but the raiders burnt down houses and looted property. A source in the provincial capital, Pemba, citing a relative who lives in the village, said the terrorists entered the village at about 22.00, when most of the villagers were asleep.
The villagers are reported to have fled into the bush, and only returned to the village late on Saturday.
In the earlier attack against Litandacua, last Tuesday night, the terrorists were given a bloody nose. A local militia fought back and killed 12 of the raiders. The Friday attack may have been in retaliation for these losses.
According to the unofficial web page “Noticias de Defesa” (“Defence News”), also on Friday the Mozambican defence and security forces carried out what were referred to as “combative reconnaissance patrols” of the Minguelewa, 1st May, Xitaxi, Chitunda, Chinda and Mbau villages, which all lie within a 10 kilometres radius of one of the terrorists’ main bases, known as “Base Syria”, in Mocimboa da Praia district.
The Mozambican forces then patrolled the villages of Nanquidunda, Naquitengue, Anga, Limala and Marere, the Administrative Post of Mbau and the town of Mocímboa da Praia itself, in search of members of the terrorist organisation.
The website claims that the defence forces shelled areas at Nguri Lake regarded as advanced post of “Base Syria”, and areas suspected of containing small jihadist camps. Seven huts in Mbau, believed to have served as a terrorist hideout, were burnt down.
The Mozambican forces destroyed a truck hidden under trees on the Naquitengue-Mbau road. The truck had been stolen in a major raid against Mocimboa da Praia town on 28 June, and the terrorists had used it to carry away looted goods.
Last Thursday, according to “Noticias de Defesa”, the defence forces surprised a group of terrorists as they were fishing on Nguri lake and killed 11 of them. In Anga village, the defence forces killed a further seven terrorists.
On 25 July, the Mozambican forces entered the islamists’ “Base Quissanga” (not to be confused with the town of that name), and completed its destruction. They killed the sole terrorist found in the base, and recovered nine motor-bikes, as well as an unspecified amount of military equipment.
