A terrorist group, believed to consist of islamic fundamentalists, on Friday attacked the Nfindi fishing centre in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.
The Nfindi centre is on the border between Mocímboa da Praia and Palma districts. It is frequented by fishermen from both districts. According to sources in Mocímboa da Praia cited by the paper the attack occurred at about 07h00 am. The raiders surprised three fishermen and beheaded them.
The victims were in a camp on the bank of the Nfindi river. Earlier this year, in the same region, a base of the insurgents was supposedly dismantled by the Mozambican defence and security forces. The area is hard to reach overland. Fishermen from Mocímboa da Praia town normally use canoes to reach Nfindi.
Meanwhile, in Palma town, people displaced from Malamba village, which was attacked by insurgents last Tuesday have asked the authorities to give them protection and means of transport to that they can return to the village and recover their possessions.
There are also reports that a group of people who formed a unit to pursue the insurgents in the bush of the Olumbi administrative post came under attack. One person was injured and taken for treatment at the Palma health centre.
People from Chiduadua village in Nangade distict on Friday night launched another retaliatory raid against an insurgent group. One alleged insurgent was captured and later lynched. According to the paper’s source this man, this man, who was speaking in Swahili, was attempting to reach the Rovuma river, which forms the frontier with Tanzania.
