Mozambique: 19 of 220 escaped Gorongosa inmates recaptured
Just as state officials and civil servants were preparing to return to Muidumbe district in Cabo Delgado province, as ordered by District Administrator Saíde Aly Chabane, terrorists attacked the district for the first time since April.
‘Carta de Moçambique’ says that the villages of Namacande, Muatide, Nchinga, Muambula, Namacule, 24 de Março, Namande, Nampanha and Magaia were the targets of terrorist attacks this last weekend, resulting in deaths and the destruction of various public and private infrastructures.
According to the sources, the victims were all beheaded over the course of the weekend incursions. Defence and Security Forces (FDS) are said to have responded, although “not immediately”.
Carta notes that the capital of Mocímboa da Praia district has been under insurgent occupation since last August.
Speaking on the sidelines of the XX PRM Coordinating Council in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Commander-General of Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Bernardino Rafael said that the terrorists had, in the last three months, murdered around 270 people, including civilians and military personnel, and wounded 50 FDS members.
An Islamic State statement reported by Amaq news agency claims that the terrorists took over villages in the district of Muidumbe, capturing Mozambican soldiers and seizing weapons and ammunition.
