Support from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) in the fight against terrorism was one of the themes of a virtual meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, and her Cape Verdean counterpart, Rui Alberto Soares.
The Cape Verdean minister, also the acting chairman of the CPLP Council of Ministers, said on the occasion that this organization would put at the disposal of the Mozambican Government “whatever is necessary”.
In turn, Minister Verónica Macamo shared information on the latest political developments in the country, in the framework of the recent summits of the Double Troika of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Maputo.
In connection with these meetings, a SADC technical commission arrives in the country this week to assess the scale of the terrorist threat that the country faces, in order to determine the type of support to be provided to help eradicate the phenomenon that has plagued Cabo Delgado province since 2017.
This working group should prepare and present, at the next extraordinary session of the SADC Double Troika, to be held in Maputo on 28 and 29 April, an operational report which will determine the intervention and assistance mechanisms that can be provided to help the country to counter terrorism.
During the Troika meetings, SADC Executive Secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax said that the problem of terrorism in Mozambique was a threat to stability and security across the southern region.
Stergomena Tax said that the solution to combat this phenomenon should involve all SADC countries, through various forms of support provided to the Government of Mozambique.
In addition to terrorism, the state of the new coronavirus pandemic in Mozambique and Cape Verde was also one of the subjects of the exchange of views between the two ministers.
Both leaders reaffirmed their interest in revitalising and strengthening bilateral relations of friendship and cooperation between Mozambique and Cape Verde, and expanding areas of cooperation.
