Mozambique’s National Road Administration (ANE) has opened a tender for the rehabilitation of the Cuamba-Muita road in the north of the country, as part of the Nacala corridor rail and port investments project, the African Bank of Development (AfDB) announced yesterday.
“The rehabilitation of the 138-kilometre section of Estrada nº 13 in Niassa province is part of the Nampula-Cuamba project already in progress,” the AfDB’s call for proposals states.
A visit to the construction site is being organised for April 10 and the opening of proposals is scheduled for May 16 at the ANE headquarters in Maputo.
The Nacala corridor comprises a railway line extending from the Malawian border to the port facilities of Nacala on the Mozambican coast. The company Portos do Norte is planning an expansion of the Port of Nacala estimated at EUR375 million, with the aim of increasing capacity.
In addition to being important to international trade for Zambia and Malawi, two southern African countries with no direct access to the sea, the Port of Nacala is also important for plans to increase coal exports from Mozambique’s Tete province.
