Ten arrested over illegal sand extraction on Beira seafront

About ten people have already been arrested this year by Beira municipal police for illegally removing sand from the seafront.
Head of Protection and Policing in the Municipality of Beira, Francisco Macombe, said that the arrests were aimed at discouraging a practice which was contributing to coastal erosion.
Francisco Macombe said that the detainees were caught near the sailboats and the Palmeiras spillway in Beira municipality, adding that the corporation would continue its inspections in order to eliminate altogether the practice of illegal sand extraction.
