A minor aged just 13 named as A Alfinete and two of his friends, L Castro (19 years old) and A Ardicha (18) are in police custody in Beira for faking a kidnapping with the aim of extorting 50,000 meticais from Alfinete’s father.
Spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Sofala, Alfeu Sitoe, dates the case back to September 11, when Castro took the 13-year-old Alfinete and hid him inside his room.
According to Sitoe, Castro then called the teenager’s father informing him that his son had been kidnapped and that the family would have to pay 50,000 meticais for his release.
In the StrongLive report below, Sitoe points out that the 13-year-old cannot be held criminally accountable. But the same is not true for either Castro, the alleged mastermind of the plot, or for M-Pesa agent Ardicha, who allegedly made his services available to receive the ransom money.
