A Mozambican teenager claims to have left her mother in neighbouring South Africa and returned to Mozambique on the grounds of alleged sexual exploitation.
The 16-year-old girl, who says she is from Inhambane province, was received by Mozambican border authorities in Namaacha, Maputo province, and was referred to district social services.
The Namaacha district director of Women’s Health and Social Action confirms having taken custody of the minor, who has expressed her wish to reunite with family in Inhambane.
According to José da Silva, the minor says that her mother forced her several times to have sex with men in exchange for money.
Meanwhile, the Children’s Department at the Provincial Directorate for Gender, Children and Social Action says it is already in touch with authorities in Mpumalanga, the South African province from which the girl fled, with a view to identifying the mother.
