Technical intervention caused the blackout in central and northern Mozambique

A technical intervention at the Cahora Bassa dam power plant caused a blackout of about five hours on Tuesday in central and northern Mozambique, the company announced today.
“This interruption was caused by an unforeseen disturbance that occurred in the current work process, aimed at modernising the servers of the control system of the generator sets of the company,” the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Company (HCB) announced in a statement.
“The modernisation of the servers has been developed with technical intervention of the equipment manufacturer, General Electric,” reads the document.
The blackout happened at 5:22 p.m. and the resumption of power supply started about five hours later, adds the communique.
Besides Mozambique (EDM), power supply to South Africa (Eskom) and Zimbabwe (Zeza) was affected.
