Teachers at the Industrial and Commercial School (EICB) June 25 in the city of Beira who went on strike on Tuesday in protest against the non-payment of overtime for September and October in 2015, and 14 days of November of this year are back at work and the situation has returned to normal.
Yesterday Diário de Moçambique visited the school and found the marking of exams underway as a result of discussions that teachers held with Sofala Provincial Director of Science and Technology, Higher Education and Professional Technician, Ana da Graça Luís Ernesto.
Ana da Graça Luís Ernesto visited the school herself yesterday after a team sent to investigate the causes of the strike which had resulted in the boycotting of exam marking since the 21st November, reached at understanding with the teachers.
The Provincial director said that a lack of communication between her department and the school had precipitated the strike.
A statement sent to all educational establishments on 17 October said the economic difficulties that the country is experiencing were the reason for the non-payments.
“On October 25 of the same month, the second communiqué was issued by the Provincial Directorate of Economy and Finance, instructing schools calculate overtime and send invoices for the months of September and October [2015] and 14 days of November to the Beira District Education and Technology Services,” she said.
“This last statement, from the Provincial Directorate of Economy and Finance, did not arrive in time to the Industrial and Commercial School. It only arrived the day before yesterday. But that does not justify the teachers’ action, boycotting exam marking. I think that an exaggerated response. But the situation is now under control and the correction of exams has resumed,” she said.
