A teacher has been arrested by the Mozambique police in the Báruè district of Manica on counterfeiting charges.
Using a printer, the detainee, a teacher of eight years standing, allegedly produced counterfeit banknotes and circulated them on the market, STV reported.
Confessing to the crime, the teacher said that, being aware of the risks involved, he had engaged two other individuals to carry out commercial transactions with the banknotes.
“I have a couple of friends who, when they saw my printer, had the idea of photocopying notes. I was aware that it was risky, so I gave them the task of moving the notes,” he confessed, quoted by STV.
Against this backdrop, PRM commander in Báruè, Eliseu Mpila, took the opportunity to appeal to people to be vigilant so as not to end up in possession of counterfeit notes.
“In total, there are 27,200 meticais in 500 and 200 meticais notes in circulation. They deceived the population in the markets, fairs and places of entertainment,” Mpila said. “The population should pay attention whenever they receive money, verifying that notes are real.”
This is the second detention of individuals for possession of counterfeit notes in Manica in less than a week. The first occurred in Sussundenga, where the counterfeit currency totalled more than 6,000 meticais.
