The Mozambique Tax Authority (AT) plans install a freight train scanner in Dondo municipality, Sofala, this year, at the meeting point of the Sena and Machipanda lines.
The scanner is intended to deal with the misuse of the railway by dishonest forestry operators and traders involved in smuggling. According to AT’s Raimundo Mapanzene, formal contacts with the Dondo Municipal Council and Mozambique Railways are already at an advanced stage.
The scanner is a non-intrusive inspection mechanism which allows a freight car’s contents to be inspected without it being opened.
In addition to installing the scanner, the AT is proposing further measures to clamp down on wood smuggling by domestic and foreign operators in Sofala.
