Mozambqiue: Criminal case opened against eight involved in gold theft - AIM report
Folha de Maputo
A fake toll station was being temporarily set up in Maputo province to snare lorries seeking to avoid the weighbridge on National Highway Number Four (EN4).
Truck drivers who fell for the ruse handed over amounts like 100 meticais, much less than they were likely to pay at the official weighbridge.
TV Miramar reporteds« that the “officials” operating the illegal toll told drivers the money was to be used for the rehabilitation of the road and the construction of other transport infrastructures in that area of Maputo province.
But according to the ANE (National Roads Administration) spokesperson for Maputo province, both the toll and the road were illegal and the ANE had no knowledge of either.
A task team has now put an end to the scam. INATTER, Transit police and TRAC officers went to the site and sent drivers back to the official weighbridge, after levying the appropriate fines.
However, recognising the importance of the new, if unofficial, road for the community, the team decided to keep it open, but without the toll.
Some of the motorists fined complained about the weight limits for trucks now in force, saying that the amount of cargo they are allowed to carry doesn’t even pay their expenses.
