Since Saturday, residents of the district of Palma in particular and the province of Cabo Delgado in general have been able to travel to and from neighbouring Tanzania through the Namoto border, thanks to its opening by the Tanzanian authorities. The Mozambican side had been open for a long time, but the Tanzanian side remained closed.
For traders in Palma-sede, this is a positive step because it will allow the population to return to normal circulation, as well as boosting trade between the two countries.
Momade Salimo, an informal trader in the town of Palma, commented to ‘Carta’ that this was the end of an ordeal for many economic operators who engage in commerce with the neighbouring Republic of Tanzania, as they had been obliged to use the Negomano border crossing in Mueda district instead.
“They opened the crossing to Tanzania, there are no problems, they just need people to pass, he said. “So we are satisfied, even on the Tanzanian side they are enjoying it. I think the district will develop; we were in a bad situation, using Negomano slowed things down a lot.” “As of this Monday, there is already a visa for Tanzania, but also the permit already works,” he added.
Another Palma district resident commented that the opening of the Namoto border by Tanzania might also allow the return of families displaced there by the terrorist attacks.
The Namoto border crossing closed when terrorists launched their attack on the town of Palma in mid-2021, forcing nearby gas projects to come to a halt.
Speaking to journalists, Palma administrator João Buchili characterised the security situation in Palma district as good, saying that the population now travels up to 30 kilometres distant without escort from the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and their Rwanda allies.
