South African president removes minister criticised by key coalition partner
Tanzanian authorities warned on Sunday they will take punitive measures against immigration officials who facilitate illegal immigrants to gain entry in the east African nation.
“When illegal immigrants are arrested inside the country it means that there are immigration officials along the country’s borders who facilitate their entry,” said George Simbachawene, the Minister for Home Affairs.
Opening a leadership training course for immigration officers in Mkinga district of Tanga region, the minister said if illegal immigrants gained entry into the country without being noticed by law enforcement authorities, it was easier for enemies and criminals to pass through the borders unnoticed.
At least 15,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in Tanzania between January and November in 2020.
In addition, 45 Tanzanians were arrested during the same period in connection with facilitation of the entry of the illegal immigrants.
