Tanzanian police at Dar Es Salaam International Airport on 27 May seized boxes containing tusks and other wild animal parts, which had been dispatched from Pemba Airport to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
‘Carta’ has learned that the cargo was dispatched by the firm Zein Mariscos LDA, based in the Bairro Expansão in Pemba.
A joint note from LAM and Aeroportos de Moçambique additionally revealed that a passenger on the flight had declared the boxes as containing shellfish.
The note adds that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances in which the transport of the prohibited cargo had come to be allowed. The investigation in Mozambique is being coordinated by Sernic.
Cargo handling at Pemba airport is undertaken by LAM. ‘Carta’ has established that two LAM officers on duty on the flight have been suspended pending conclusion of the investigation.
Meanwhile, according to Zumbo FM Notícias, on Monday 28-05, SERNIC agents detained and later released the head of LAM’s Pemba cargo terminal on suspicion of involvement in the case.
Zumbo FM adds that the alleged owners of the cargo, of Chinese nationality, were arrested in Tanzania.
