The leaders of Tanzania’s main opposition Chadema party, including Freeman Mbowe and four other are being remanded in custody over alleged subversive activities against public order. The quintet appeared before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate Court on Tuesday accused of staging an illegal demonstration.
Mbowe is also a Member of Parliament for HAi constituency.
The accused were arraigned before Principle Resident Magistrate Wibard Mashauri, prosecuted by State Attorney Faraja Nchimbi.
The demonstration is alleged to have caused the death of National Institute of Transport (NIT) student Akwilina Akwiline after a shot following clashes with anti-riot police.
Others alleged together with the party leader include its secretary general Vincent Mashinji, party’s secretary general for the mainland John Mnyika, deputy secretary general Zanzibar Salum Mwalimu, among others.
The accused were taken to remand custody until Wednesday when their case will be mentioned for bail consideration.
