The provincial Director of Education in Nampula, Júlio Mendes, has professed outrage at systemic teacher absenteeism in Nampula schools.
Mendes said that school directors, knowing the real situation in their schools, should be aware of this phenomenon, the better to respond to current challenges in education
“We have to have control of our school. It is not permitted for teachers to study at the Universidade Pedagógica (UP) without us knowing. This year that will not be possible, because we have the UP database to establish which teachers are studying when they should be in the classroom. We have to change this scenario,” Mendes said.
Mendes was speaking yesterday at the opening of the eleventh school directors’ training and capacity-building course at the Marere Teacher Training Institute in Nampula. Nearly 140 school administrators from Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa are participating in the training, which lasts approximately one month.
