Mozambique: Government failed to repay 3.4 billion meticais of debt
The donation will be made available to municipality and district governments for application in strategies and initiatives that increase the levels of participation of women, men and young people in local governance processes.
Switzerland will provide US$10 million for an inclusive development project in Nampula and Niassa provinces in northern Mozambique, according to an official statement.
“This initiative is in line with the priorities of the Mozambican government, combining local decentralization with climate change adaptation and financing, and strengthening local accountability,” Laila Sheikh, deputy head of the Swiss Mission in Mozambique, says in the statement.
The sum will be made available to municipality and district governments for application in strategies and initiatives that increase the levels of participation of women, men and young people in local governance processes.
“The project’s effectiveness and sustainability will be ensured by broad interaction, coordination and synergies between actors and institutions at the various levels of government, who work daily to improve the living conditions of citizens in Nampula and Niassa provinces,” Sheikh says.
In addition to Switzerland, which is providing the funding for the project, the initiative also enjoys the support of the German Cooperation in Mozambique agency and the United Nations Capital Development Fund, among others.
