Around 10 tons of brown sugar, supposedly acquired in Swaziland for sale in Mozambique, have been confiscated by the tax authority for non-payment of applicable custom duties.
The product was seized in a house in Namaacha, Maputo province, by a Tax Authority tactical reaction brigade.
“The seizure of the sugar arises pursuant to a Customs Court search warrant authorizing the search of homes and commercial establishments,” a press release sent to A Verdade read.
The Tax Authority says that in the last 15 days, tactical reaction brigades have seized twenty minibuses “because their owners have made false declarations in the act of importation, with the vehicles declared to be for the transport of goods, paying only 5 percent of customs duties, when in reality they were intended for carrying passengers, and therefore subject to 5 percent customs duty and 17 percent VAT. To recover their vehicles, the owners should rectify the category and pay the amount due”.
