The Swedish Embassy, and the international NGO We Effect on Thursday signed an agreement to finance Mozambican civil society organisations to the tune of 95.8 million Swedish crowns (about 11.4 million US dollars) in the areas of natural resources, agriculture, climate change and the environment.
According to a press release from the Swedish embassy, this falls under the implementation of the second phase of the Action Programme for Inclusive and Responsible Governance (AGIR), covering the period 2018-2020.
“With the signing of this agreement, we intend to strengthen the capacity of Mozambican civil society organisations and the respective beneficiary local communities , in order to better participate in and influence decision making about the management of Mozambique’s natural resources”, said the Embassy’s Head of Cooperation, Mikael Elofsson.
The release added that Sweden supports over 70 Mozambican civil society organisations, “in order to ensure more inclusive and participatory democratic governance”.
“An important component of Swedish support”, it continued, “is to strengthen the capacity of these organisations to implement development programmes”.
Maria Schultz, the Regional Director of We Effect, added “This support plays a fundamental role in promoting democracy and the responsible and inclusive management of natural resources, seeking to improve the living conditions of women and men in the rural areas of Mozambique”.
According to We Effect, the entire amount to be disbursed over the six years of AGIR (2015-2020) is 172 million Swedish crowns.
