The Swedish ambassador to Mozambique Marie Anderson de Frutos has announced that his country will find US$15 million to support Mozambique in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
The sum will be channelled through the World Bank, in coordination with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action, and is intended for social protection, the diplomat explained.
“We are on the side of Mozambique in this complicated situation, and have been able to find an additional US$15 million for social protection. This implies that one million Mozambicans will be able to receive support,” Marie Anderson de Frutos explained after a meeting with Esperança Bias, president of the Mozambican parliament, at the end of her three-year term as ambassador.
“It was a farewell meeting, because I am leaving the country. We were fortunate to be able to talk about the excellent relations obtaining between Sweden and Mozambique,” the ambassador said, adding that bilateral relations with Sweden looked set to continue, with expressions of interest in further strengthening the relationship between the parliaments of the two countries.
Spokesperson for the President of the Mozambican Parliament Oriel Chemane said that “as a strategic partner, Sweden has been supporting Mozambique”, including in efforts to reduce the consumption of paper by increasing the computerisation of Assembly of the Republic activities.
The support comes at a time when Mozambique has announced that it needs US$700 million to address the pandemic, of which it has secured only US$309 million so far.
