UNHCR is pleased to announce the contribution from the Government of Sweden of SEK 7,000,000 (USD 832,916) to the internally displaced persons’ (IDP) response in Mozambique. In addition to this humanitarian support, Sweden also granted UNHCR almost SEK 700,000,000 (USD 83,291,600) in core support for Mozambique in 2021.
“As part of Sweden’s solid and long-lasting support to UNHCR, we are very grateful for this contribution as it will help us assist and protect 27,000 refugees and asylum-seekers living in Mozambique, as well as over 669,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected so far by the violence in Cabo Delgado, with numbers increasing every day” says Samuel Chakwera, UNHCR Representative in Mozambique.
Other than UNHCR’s well-established presence in Nampula for the refugee response, the UN Refugee Agency has also been identifying and implementing lifesaving programmes that respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs of IDPs and host communities in Cabo Delgado and neighbouring provinces. UNHCR’s main objectives for the IDP response in 2021 include to identify, mitigate and respond to protection risks of the affected populations, as well as to expand community-based protection mechanisms, empowering affected communities to address their own protection concerns.
“Sweden gives high priority to the rights and needs of refugees and displaced people and is one of the largest donors to the UNHCR. We are confident that this humanitarian support, in addition to our core support to UNHCR, will help deliver assistance to internally displaced people in Cabo Delgado and neighbouring provinces, particularly to women and girls affected by crisis.” says Mette Sunnergren, Ambassador of Sweden in Mozambique.
UNHCR Mozambique wishes to thank the Government of Sweden for its support, that comes in a crucial time when challenges and gaps are increasing, and more people are in need of assistance.
This timely contribution from Sweden is part of the country’s long-standing support as one of UNHCR’s most important strategic partners and largest donors. In line with UNHCR’s Annual Global Appeal 2021, the Swedish contribution will support UNHCR to comply with its protection mandate towards more than 70 million uprooted people in the world.
